Michael Turner
Stainless Steel Sculpture | Wildlife & Engineering | Nature Brought to Life
Michael Turner is a British sculptor whose extraordinary stainless steel creations capture the beauty, character and movement of the natural world. Working from his studio in Hampshire's New Forest, he transforms marine-grade steel into remarkably lifelike sculptures, from delicate insects and birds to magnificent horses, big cats and larger-than-life wildlife. His work combines engineering precision with an instinctive understanding of form, creating pieces that feel alive with personality and presence.
Michael's fascination with sculpture began in childhood, turning nuts, bolts and discarded metal from his father's garage into small creatures. After studying art and graduating with honours in Three-Dimensional Design, he established his first workshop at just 22. Surrounded by the wildlife and landscapes of the New Forest, he developed a distinctive approach to working with stainless steel, combining traditional welding techniques with recycled materials, intricate hand-forming and carefully polished finishes.
Every sculpture is individually handcrafted, with the strength of steel transformed into flowing contours, expressive movement and extraordinary anatomical detail. His signature works, including Gorilla on a Crate and Crocodile on a Box, demonstrate his ability to capture both the power and personality of his subjects, often with a subtle touch of humour.
Michael's sculptures have found homes across the world, from private collections and luxury settings to significant public installations. Notable commissions include a life-sized gorilla acquired by Gordon Ramsay for his London restaurant and A Dynamic Force, a striking horse and jockey sculpture commissioned by Hamilton Park Racecourse to commemorate Sir Ian Good during its centenary celebrations. His work has also been exhibited at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Sculpture at Beaulieu, with installations reaching as far as Asia and the Americas.
Each Michael Turner sculpture reflects a lifelong fascination with nature and an exceptional command of his chosen material. Whether capturing the strength of a gorilla or the delicate movement of a dragonfly, he brings warmth, character and remarkable craftsmanship to a material traditionally associated with industry.
As with all Michael Turner sculptures, each piece can be commissioned and individually crafted to your exact size and scale requirements, creating a truly bespoke work for your chosen setting.
