Thomas Perceval
Contemporary Tree Art | Wood, Fire & Precision | Nature in Every Line
Thomas Perceval is a British artist based in Cardiff whose intricate tree artworks capture the character and beauty of the natural world. Growing up on the border of Mid Wales and Herefordshire, he developed a deep connection with the countryside, particularly the solitary trees standing exposed against winter skies. Today, he combines traditional drawing with laser burning technology to create distinctive artworks that reveal the extraordinary complexity of nature.
Creativity runs deep in Thomas's family. His grandfather was the Australian painter John Perceval, his great-uncle Arthur Boyd, and his step-grandfather Sir Sidney Nolan, three significant figures in Australian art. Surrounded by creativity from childhood, Thomas studied at Hereford College of Arts before completing a BA in Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts in London. Returning to the countryside brought his artistic direction into focus, reconnecting him with the landscapes that had inspired him growing up.
Each artwork begins with the search for a particular tree, chosen for its form, character and the connection Thomas feels towards it. Working from photographs and sketches, he spends hundreds of hours meticulously drawing its intricate network of branches. Every hand-drawn line is then recreated through laser burning onto wood, combining traditional artistry with modern technology. The natural grain and burning process ensure that even within a limited edition, each piece remains subtly unique.
Such is the complexity of his process that Thomas typically completes just one new tree drawing each year. His work has been exhibited across the UK, including at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol and Olympia London, with artworks sold internationally.
Each Thomas Perceval artwork celebrates the individuality of nature, preserving a moment in the life of a tree through patience, craftsmanship and fire. His work invites us to look closer and rediscover the extraordinary beauty of something we might otherwise walk straight past.
