ICARUS I (Limitierte Auflage von 6)

Ich wurde beauftragt, eine Skulptur für die Olympischen Spiele 2012 in London zu entwerfen. Die Figur stellt den lebensgroßen Jungen Ikarus dar, den Sohn des Daidalos, der kurz davor steht, in den Himmel und in die Freiheit zu springen. Das Originalwerk wurde aus Ton und Gips gefertigt und nahm viele Monate in Anspruch. Es wurde in Bronze gegossen, nach London transportiert und während der Olympischen sowie der Paralympischen Spiele 2012 im zentralen Bereich für die Athleten im Olympischen Dorf aufgestellt.

Ich war schon lange vom Ikarus-Mythos fasziniert und empfand ihn als inspirierende Figur von Wagemut, jugendlichem Mut und Optimismus. Ich habe in der Folge neun weitere Ikarus-Figuren geschaffen.

Auf dem Sockel unter der Figur befindet sich ein Teil eines Gedichts, das Michael Spilberg für das Werk geschrieben hat. Es lautet:

„Meine Kühnheit war meine Freude,
nicht mein Verderben,
ich erreichte einen Ruhm, der höher war als der Olymp,
mein Sturz war den Flug wert“

Die Originalskulptur wurde 2012 bei Sotheby’s verkauft und dieses spezielle Werk kann im
The Sculpture Park in Surrey besichtigt werden.
