ICARUS I (Édition limitée à 6 exemplaires)

J'ai été commissionné pour réaliser une sculpture pour les Jeux olympiques de Londres 2012. La figure représente le garçon Icare, fils de Dédale, grandeur nature, sur le point de s'élancer vers le ciel et la liberté. L'œuvre originale a été réalisée en argile et en plâtre et a nécessité de nombreux mois de travail. Elle a été coulée en bronze, puis transportée à Londres et placée dans la zone centrale des athlètes au sein du village olympique, aussi bien pendant les Jeux olympiques que paralympiques de 2012.

J'étais fasciné par le mythe d'Icare depuis longtemps et je trouvais en lui une figure inspirante d'audace, de courage juvénile et d'optimisme. J'ai par la suite créé 9 autres figures d'Icare.

Sur le socle sous la figure se trouve un extrait d'un poème, écrit pour l'œuvre par Michael Spilberg. Il se lit comme suit :

« Mon audace fut ma joie,
Non mon désastre,
J'ai atteint une gloire plus haute que l'Olympe,
Ma chute valait le vol »

La sculpture originale a été vendue chez Sotheby’s en 2012 et cette œuvre particulière peut être vue au
Sculpture Park dans le Surrey.
