ELEPHANT BULL: LARGE (Limited Edition of 12)

This bronze draws on more than three decades of Mackie’s close observation of African elephants. His research included encounters at Lewa in Kenya, near Il Ngwesi Lodge, and later in Tanzania around the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti. The pose conveys an alert bull elephant moving backwards with its head lifted, one ear held back, the other attentive and its tail raised.

The clay original was made using locally sourced earth, connecting the material of the model with the animal’s environment. The result concentrates the presence, intelligence and physical tension of an elephant into a relatively compact piece.
