TURTLES (Limited Edition of 12)

Originally commissioned for a private client in Barbados, this sculpture portrays three life-size sea turtles apparently swimming amid underwater foliage. Mackie developed the idea for a poolside setting during lockdown, using a green sea turtle at Cotswold Wildlife Park as a research reference when travel was impossible.

 He modelled the supporting plant forms upside down to achieve the sensation of underwater movement. Lockbund Foundry undertook the technically demanding stainless-steel casting and finishing process; development from the original model to the finished piece took about a year. The silvery material, open composition and potential reflections accentuate the fluidity of the sea creatures.
