Andrew Stevens
Mechanical Sculpture | Imagination & Engineering | The Winged Minotaur's
Dr Andrew Stevens FRSA FBIPP FCSD is a British sculptor whose intricate, mechanical creations unite imagination, humour, and precision engineering. Best known for his ongoing Winged Minotaur's series, he builds fantastical machines that feel both whimsical and purposeful - miniature worlds powered by myth, motion, and meticulous craft.
After a distinguished fifty-year career in photography, design, and academia, Andrew turned to sculpture, bringing with him decades of creative expertise and a scholar’s understanding of form and structure. Influenced by Michael Ayrton, W. Heath Robinson, and Roland Emmett, his sculptures channel a spirit of invention and storytelling - mock engineering elevated into art. Each piece is assembled from metal, brass, and reclaimed components, blending the intricacy of clockwork with the character of human imagination.
His work has been exhibited and collected widely, with pieces shown at the Rothschild’s Palais des Vaches Gallery in Exbury, Clifton Fine Art in Bristol, and The Sculpture Park in Churt. Recognition has come quickly: finalist in the VAA Artist of the Year Award, winner of the ArtClub Chianciano Italia Prize at the 2023 London Biennale, the Boomer Gallery Art Prize in 2024, and the RBSA Winter Exhibition Prize in 2025. His sculptures have been featured in Modern Renaissance (Washington DC) and Collect Art 3D Special (Netherlands).
Now a member of the Bath Society of Artists and former judge at their Open Exhibition, Andrew continues to expand his creative language. Each Winged Minotaur is both machine and myth - a fusion of artistry, humour, and invention that invites viewers to step into a world where imagination still drives the gears.
Each work celebrates movement, craftsmanship, and curiosity - proof that invention, once sparked, never truly rests.
