David O'Brien
Contemporary Mosaic | Icons Reimagined | Energy & Precision
David O’Brien is a mosaic artist based in rural Lancashire whose work fuses precision, passion, and a playful rethinking of icons. Under his banner Big and Small Mosaics, he hand-cuts ceramic tile and glass to reinterpret subjects from music, motorsport, fashion, and urban culture - turning nostalgia into fresh, tactile narratives.
His journey into mosaics was sparked during a trip to Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell, and over decades he has developed a visual language rooted in contrast, repetition and surprise. He works from his studio in Bickerstaffe, producing both 2D wall mosaics and 3D sculptural pieces that push the medium forward.
David’s mosaic portfolio includes works based on album covers, retro posters, rare cars, and designer icons - everything from trainers, handbags and pop symbols to racing helmets. His pieces are often commissioned as one-offs, presented in fine gallery settings, and occasionally created live at events. Notably, in 2025 he was commissioned by Kaseya to produce a live mosaic at DattoCon Miami, a commission that led to his role as resident artist travelling with them to exhibitions worldwide.
A member of the Guild of Motoring Artists, David continues to expand his reach within galleries across the UK - including Sleeping with Art, Escapade Silverstone, Art of Motoring at the Royal Automobile Club, and Savile Row Concours. His work sits in private collections, admired for its bold modern twist on mosaic traditions and its quiet devotion to craft.
Each David O’Brien mosaic is both homage and reinvention: familiar icons broken into shards and reformed into new voice. His art invites viewers to pause, recognise, and then see differently - the past reframed in shimmering fragments.
