Deborah Harrison
Stone Sculpture | Spirit & Form | Enduring Presence
Deborah Harrison is an award-winning British sculptor whose work in stone is guided by intuition, faith, and a deep reverence for material and form. Based in Gloucester, she discovered her calling later in life during a chance visit to an arts festival and quickly made stone her lifelong medium through a Fine Art foundation and a diploma in stone masonry.
Working in what she calls “carving direct,” Deborah lets the stone’s grain, colour, and inner life guide her tools until she uncovers a “skin” within - it is here, she believes, that the sculpture finds its own voice. Her pieces move across a spectrum - from figurative motifs like horses and human figures to abstractions resonating with spirituality and contemporary relevance.
Her work has appeared in places from Gloucester Cathedral to St Stephen’s, Walbrook, and Norwich Cathedral. She is a founder member of the Cotswold Sculptors Association and regularly leads carving workshops from her Gloucester City Works studio. Among her recent achievements is a commission to carve a ceremonial lamprey pie - a traditional gift from Gloucester - presented to King Charles III to mark the Coronation, now housed at Highgrove Gardens.
Each Deborah Harrison sculpture invites connection - between material and meaning, surface and soul. They stand as quiet yet powerful echoes of the natural world, spiritual longing, and the unseen narrative of the stone itself.
