Derek Hare
OIL PAINTING | LIGHT & ATMOSPHERE | GLOBAL LANDSCAPES
Derek Hare is a British oil painter whose work captures the movement, light and atmosphere of landscapes shaped by a lifetime of travel and observation. With over six decades of experience, his paintings carry a quiet authority - works that reflect not just what is seen, but what is understood through years of returning to the same subjects with clarity and intent.
Born in South Shields into a seafaring family, the sea has remained a constant thread throughout his practice. That early connection has evolved into a global body of work, with paintings created across Europe, the Caribbean, the Middle East and India. From the light-filled waters of the Bahamas and Seychelles to the shifting tones of Northern Europe and the architectural landscapes of Jaipur and beyond, Derek approaches each location through experience rather than reference - capturing atmosphere as much as place.
Working exclusively in oils, his paintings are built through disciplined observation and a deep sensitivity to light. Surfaces are developed with control and restraint, allowing colour, movement and distance to emerge naturally. Whether depicting open water, distant horizons or layered landscapes, his work balances immediacy with refinement - paintings that feel both grounded and expansive.
His career has been defined by both private and institutional recognition. During the 1980s, works were acquired by HRH Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum, alongside commissions that remain in long-standing collections. Corporate collectors have included Deutsche Bank, Barclays, KPMG and Merck Fink, while international projects have seen him produce major bodies of work for the Seychelles government and the India Tourist Board, including the exhibition Visions of India in London.
Derek has also produced commissioned works for private clients, hotels and superyachts, with paintings placed both on land and at sea. His work has been widely published and reproduced, extending its reach far beyond the original canvas, while maintaining a strong presence within private collections worldwide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
There is a depth to Derek Hare’s work that comes only with time. Each painting is the result of decades of travel, observation and refinement - a lifetime dedicated to understanding light, place and the ever-changing nature of the world around us.
