Eve Shepherd
Figurative Sculpture | Clay & Bronze | Human Presence
Eve Shepherd is a British sculptor whose work centres on the human figure, explored with restraint, sensitivity and a strong sense of observation. Working primarily in clay and bronze, she creates sculptures that capture quiet, unguarded moments - figures absorbed in thought, pause or stillness.
Her approach is deliberately understated. Gestures are minimal, expressions subdued, and surfaces left open to the trace of the hand. Rather than telling a story, Eve allows form, posture and material to do the work, giving her figures a grounded, natural presence that feels unforced and honest.
Clay plays a central role in her practice, chosen for its immediacy and responsiveness. Eve works directly with the material, allowing pressure, touch and surface texture to remain visible. Selected works are later cast in bronze, retaining the softness and subtlety of the original modelling while introducing weight and permanence.
Alongside her studio practice, Eve has completed a number of significant public sculpture commissions. These include a portrait of Stephen Hawking for University of Cambridge, works for the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cape Town, a permanent public sculpture of Betty Campbell MBE in Cardiff city centre, and Sea People, now held as a permanent installation at the National Maritime Museum. These commissions reflect a practice trusted to translate human presence into works of lasting public and cultural significance.
Eve has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, and her work is held in both private and public collections. She is particularly known for her sketch series and smaller studies, which sit alongside larger sculptures as complete works in their own right, offering a direct insight into her process and way of seeing.
Eve Shepherd’s sculpture is calm, thoughtful and quietly compelling - work that rewards time and close attention, and sits naturally within spaces that value craft, humanity and authenticity.
