Ewan Story
CONTEMPORARY FIGURATION | ATMOSPHERIC NARRATIVE | PAINTING AS RESISTANCE
Ewan Story is a London-born painter whose work explores the fragile territory between memory and myth - where history lingers, belief persists, and time feels slightly unsettled. Working primarily in oil, he creates figurative compositions that feel familiar yet quietly estranged, as though something has shifted just beneath the surface. His paintings do not declare; they unfold. They ask the viewer to slow down and step into spaces shaped as much by psychology as by place.
At the heart of Ewan’s practice is a deliberate commitment to traditional oil painting. Layer by layer, he builds surfaces that carry atmosphere as much as image - paint handled with patience, restraint and clarity. In an era dominated by speed and digital immediacy, this slow process becomes more than technique; it becomes philosophy. The act of painting itself is an assertion of human presence, a quiet refusal to rush meaning.
Figuration is central to his visual language. His subjects often inhabit ambiguous environments that hover between past and present - landscapes that feel remembered rather than observed. Through these constructed worlds, Ewan explores how collective history, personal memory and cultural narratives continue to shape contemporary identity. There is tension in the work, but also tenderness - a sense that something is being protected, preserved, or reconsidered.
Currently completing a postgraduate MA in Fine Art at Falmouth University, Ewan is developing a research-led, interdisciplinary dimension to his practice, deepening the conceptual rigour behind the paintings. His work has gained notable international recognition, including selection for 100 Emerging Artworks by the Arts to Hearts Project and an Honourable Mention at the Almenara Art Prize. In 2025 alone, he secured multiple awards and open call victories across London and Europe, with work exhibited in Budapest, at The Koppel Project in London, and featured on Artsy following the Boomer Art Prize. His paintings now sit in private collections in the UK and internationally.
Ewan Story’s work stands as a quiet act of resistance - proof that careful observation, layered paint, and considered thought still have power. Each canvas offers a pause in the noise, a space where memory breathes and the present moment feels just slightly altered.
