Gary Nicholls
Photographic Alchemy | Narrative Worlds | Fine Art Composites on Metal
Gary Nicholls is a British fine art photographic artist whose work transforms storytelling into spectacle. Drawing from the traditions of the Old Masters and the energy of Steampunk, he uses his camera like a brush - composing richly layered, cinematic images that feel painted, imagined, and lived.
Trained in design and deeply technical in approach, Nicholls builds each scene from scratch - blending photography, digital layering, and post-production mastery to achieve a luminous depth reminiscent of oil painting. Printed on Chromaluxe metal panels, his works radiate light and clarity, giving every character and environment a visceral presence.
Best known for The Imaginarium - a 450-image trilogy over a decade in the making – Nicholls builds entire worlds. Each image stands alone as a visual narrative, yet forms part of a vast, mythic whole. This is art that invites you in, dares you to decode, and rewards repeat viewing.
With influences ranging from Vermeer and Caravaggio to Dali and Dickens, Nicholls doesn’t create in isolation. His work is collaborative, theatrical, and unapologetically ambitious - drawing from history, fantasy, and imagination to produce modern-day tableaus with soul.
Exhibited internationally from the Louvre to New York, and celebrated across press and television, Nicholls continues to push the boundaries of photographic storytelling – proving that the box never existed.
