Jonathan Hateley
Figurative Sculpture | Nature & Movement | Form in Flow
Jonathan Hateley is a British sculptor whose work blends the human form with the quiet rhythms of nature - figures that seem to stretch, balance and breathe, captured in bronze and resin bronze with intricate surface detail and a strong emotional presence. His sculptures hold a sense of motion in stillness, shaped by a deep connection to landscape, pattern and organic growth.
Before developing his own artistic language, Jonathan spent years sculpting for theatre, television and film - working on productions such as The Phantom of the Opera and with the English National Opera. That background in performance and storytelling informs the expressive gestures and sculptural choreography that define his pieces today.
Working from his studio in the East Sussex countryside, he sculpts primarily in clay, building form through close observation and tactile manipulation. Many works incorporate low-relief patterning, hand-painted finishes and textured surfaces that invite touch as much as viewing. Each edition is cast in limited numbers - twelve in resin bronze or nine in bronze - then individually hand-finished, making every piece unique.
Jonathan’s sculptures are collected worldwide and regularly sell out. His work is exhibited across the UK, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong, and has been widely showcased in major public venues. Outdoor installations have featured at RHS Wisley, RHS Hyde Hall, the Hampton Court and Chelsea Flower Shows, Chichester Cathedral, Ascot, Cheltenham, Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park (Crown Estate), and historic settings including Leeds Castle, Woburn Abbey and Chenies Manor.
Recently awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Jonathan continues to evolve a practice rooted in movement, nature and the quiet drama of the human form.
Each sculpture carries a sense of life held in a single moment - works that invite stillness, reflection and a deeper connection to the natural world.
