Joseph Hayton
Stone & Bronze Sculpture | Myth, Nature & Architectural Form
Joseph Hayton is a sculptor and stone carver based in Pateley Bridge, nestled in Nidderdale’s Yorkshire Dales. His work is a compelling blend of raw strength and delicate nuance - rooted in material honesty and imaginative storytelling.
Trained in traditional stone carving after studying at a specialist college in York, Joseph went on to complete a hands-on apprenticeship as a stonemason before founding his own studio in 2012. Since then, he has become known for sculptures that explore folklore, nature, mythology, and the quiet symbolism of form - often reinterpreting the legendary Green Man in contemporary ways.
Working primarily in stone and bronze, Joseph sculpts intuitively from mental images - sketching in three dimensions rather than on paper. Whether shaping detailed limestone portraits, creating striking public commissions, or producing private mythic figures, each piece is crafted with precision and intention.
His public installation Pillars Past, carved from sandstone and celebrating Nidderdale’s heritage, was awarded “Highly Commended” at the National Stone Awards - underscoring his ability to merge place, history and narrative into lasting forms.
Joseph’s sculptures carry a quiet presence. They are tactile, grounded, and unafraid to embrace both myth and modernity - inviting the viewer to pause, observe, and reflect.
