Matthew Bracey
Neon Artist | British Heritage | God’s Own Junkyard
Matthew Bracey is a third-generation neon artist and proud son of the late Chris Bracey, the legendary ‘Neon Man’. Born in East London in 1976, he now co-leads God’s Own Junkyard alongside his brother Marcus and mum Linda, continuing the family’s remarkable legacy as custodians of the largest neon art archive in Europe.
With over two decades in the trade, Matthew has produced custom neon work for clients like Selfridges, Sotheby’s, Google and The Tate, and worked behind the scenes on major film and TV productions - from Batman and Mission Impossible to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But it all started with his dad, making signs for Soho’s sex shops in the ’90s, learning the craft by hand in the family’s East London workshop.
Like his dad, Matthew builds with what’s around him - salvaged wood, rusty metal, glitter, bulbs, hand-blown glass - whatever brings the piece to life. Nothing fancy, just proper neon made to light up a space and make people smile.
“I get such a thrill watching the happiness on faces when neon lights up,” he says. “I feel a bit like the Willy Wonka of neon. If you could eat it, chocolate would be the next best thing.”
