Max McCance
Wood Sculpture | Technorganic Form | Balance & Tension
Max McCance is a Scottish sculptor and furniture maker whose work blurs the line between function and form, tradition and experiment. Raised in Glasgow, he moved to Italy in the early 1980s to study sculpture and design, establishing a successful furniture-making business in Tuscany before returning to Scotland in 1989 to set up his current workshop.
His practice is defined by what he calls “technorganic” design - an approach that draws inspiration from the patterns and rhythms of nature, from the galactic scale to the sub-atomic, while embracing innovative construction methods. The results are pieces that are both familiar and unexpected: furniture that carries the balance of classical craft while pushing its structures into bold, sculptural territory.
Repetition and rhythm are central to his work. McCance often devises entirely new methods of construction to achieve the intricacy and flow he envisions, layering wood into spirals, lattices, or sequences that defy expectation. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted, yet carries an unease that makes it feel alive - beauty tempered with tension.
His work has been widely exhibited and he has been profiled in many publications. Collectors value his ability to transform wood into something both timeless and experimental - a material reimagined as an exploration of design, form, and the restless pursuit of possibility.
