Nicola Axe
Stone Carver | Figurative & Abstract Sculpture | Inspired by Nature & Spirituality
Nicola Axe is a British sculptor working primarily in stone—most notably Portland limestone - to create meditative, graceful forms that balance figuration and abstraction. Her work draws deeply from nature, spirituality, and a longstanding practice of mindfulness, resulting in sculptures that exude quiet strength and inner stillness.
Axe discovered stone carving in 2009 and has since dedicated herself to mastering traditional hand tools and techniques. Influenced by sculptors like Modigliani and Brancusi, as well as the serenity found in Buddhist and yogic traditions, her pieces often suggest heads, shells, and elemental forms - shaped with a sense of calm and intention.
Now based in South Devon, Nicola sculpts from her studio at Cockington Court, surrounded by the landscape that inspires her. Working in materials such as limestone, alabaster, and serpentine, her tactile pieces invite close observation and contemplation.
Her work has been exhibited across the UK, including at Delamore Arts, The Sculpture Park, and Wyndcliffe Court. A member of South West Sculptors, Nicola also regularly participates in Devon Open Studios.
From quiet heads to abstracted forms of the sea, each of Nicola’s sculptures is a hand-carved meditation on presence, simplicity, and the enduring beauty of natural materials.
