Nicolas Moreton is a British sculptor whose extraordinary stone carvings explore the relationship between form, space and the natural world. With four decades dedicated to his craft, he has developed a distinctive sculptural language that moves between flowing organic shapes, striking architectural forms and monumental pieces that command attention. His work celebrates the strength and beauty of stone, transforming ancient materials into contemporary sculptures filled with character, movement and presence.
For Nicolas, stone has held a fascination since childhood. He sees every piece as something with its own history and personality, shaped by millions of years before reaching his hands. After studying Fine Art at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, he established himself as a professional sculptor in 1986, developing an exceptional understanding of traditional hand-carving techniques. Working with the natural qualities of stone, he allows its texture, structure and character to influence each sculpture, occasionally incorporating light to introduce an unexpected contemporary dimension.
His work ranges from powerful standing forms and sculptural portals to intricate carvings that explore the relationship between solid material and open space. Curves, openings and carefully balanced proportions create a sense of movement within the permanence of stone. Each piece invites the viewer to explore its changing perspectives, revealing new shapes, shadows and details as they move around it.
Elected to the Royal Society of Sculptors in 1995, Nicolas has spent four decades creating works for public spaces and private collections worldwide. His sculptures have earned significant recognition, including the People's Choice Award at the National Sculpture Prize, while his major retrospective, Making a Mark, at New College, Oxford, celebrated a lifetime dedicated to stone carving. His work continues to attract international interest, with major commissions reflecting his distinctive approach to contemporary sculpture.
