The Rocking Horse Shop
TIMBER SCULPTURE | HEIRLOOM DESIGN | BESPOKE BRITISH CRAFT
Established in 1976, The Rocking Horse Shop is one of Britain’s most respected workshops dedicated to the creation and restoration of traditional rocking horses. From their Yorkshire studio, a team of skilled artisans handcrafts each piece to order, combining traditional carving, leatherwork and fine joinery to produce heirloom-quality works that are designed to last for generations.
Every horse begins as a block of carefully selected timber, gradually shaped by hand into elegant sculptural form. Layers of craftsmanship follow - carving, sanding, painting, tack making and finishing - each stage carried out with meticulous attention to proportion, character and balance. The result is not simply a functional object, but a beautifully realised piece of timber sculpture, full of life and personality.
Alongside the creation of new horses, the workshop is internationally recognised for the restoration of antique rocking horses, returning historic pieces to their former splendour while preserving the integrity of their original craftsmanship. This dedication to heritage has made The Rocking Horse Shop a trusted name among collectors, museums and families seeking truly exceptional pieces.
The workshop itself reflects the spirit of the craft. Housed within a Grade II listed cart shed in the Yorkshire countryside, it remains a working studio where traditional skills continue to be practised every day. Visitors are welcomed into a space where carving benches, leather tools and finished horses sit side by side - a rare glimpse into a living tradition.
More than toys, these are legacy objects. Each rocking horse created at The Rocking Horse Shop carries the hallmarks of time, care and skilled hands - timeless British craftsmanship designed to be treasured across generations.
