Two armoured angelic figures stand side by side, each with large grey-white feathered wings, holding swords and wearing gold breastplates with flowing red and teal garments. Warm orange light glows behind the figure on the left, cooler white light behind the figure on the right, while a dark mass of helmets fills the foreground.

THE MIRROR OF VIRTUE (Original)

Mirror of Virtue captures the moment before the final confrontation between the Archangel Michael and the fallen angel Lucifer - a suspended instant where judgement has not yet been cast and outcome remains undecided. Rather than depicting battle, the painting focuses on proximity, tension and resemblance. Their wings meet and intertwine at the centre of the composition, forming a visual mirror that reflects a deeper philosophical truth: good and evil are not distant opposites but intimately connected forces.

The merging wings symbolise how virtue and corruption often emerge from the same source. History repeatedly shows that acts of great harm are frequently carried out in the name of righteousness, belief or moral certainty. In this sense, Lucifer is not portrayed simply as evil incarnate, nor Michael as unquestionable good but as reflections of one another - two expressions of conviction, will and purpose.

The work invites the viewer to question where morality truly resides. Is virtue defined by intention, action, belief or outcome? And at what point does the pursuit of ‘good’ begin to justify darkness? By presenting both figures as equal in presence and power, Mirror of Virtue challenges binary thinking and asks the audience to confront the uncomfortable reality that the capacity for good and evil exists within the same soul.

Ultimately, the painting is not about angels but about humanity. It serves as a reminder that moral certainty can be dangerous, that self-reflection is essential and that virtue when left unexamined can become its own shadow.
