CHUMMYS' HOME RECOVERY (Original)

In this pastel work, Ray West captures a quiet evening moment on Pall Mall, where a 1930 Austin Seven Tourer rests outside the Royal Automobile Club. Painted during the fading light of London Motor Week, the small-scale car sits against the imposing stone façade of the RAC building, its vivid blue body standing out sharply against the muted greys of the street and architecture.

Ray’s control of tone and surface is evident in the contrast between polished paintwork, soft lamplight and textured stone, while the surrounding city recedes into stillness. Part of his Cars of London series, the work observes the relationship between historic vehicles and their urban surroundings - not as spectacle, but as quiet presence - capturing a fleeting pause where heritage, place and light briefly align.
