DEJA VU (One-Off)

Déjà Vu is the latest release from Mr J - a bold, layered work that explores familiarity, disruption and hidden meaning through contemporary pop-culture reference and visual coding.

At first glance, the imagery feels recognisable. Spend more time with it and the composition begins to fracture. Portraiture slips out of alignment, colour blocks behave like digital artefacts, and the surface feels deliberately unstable. This ‘glitch’ effect is central to the work, referencing the idea of reality briefly breaking - a visual echo of the moment that gives the piece its title.

Influenced by The Matrix, the work uses the concept of the glitch as a signal that something beneath the surface has shifted. Subtle nods to classical art and coded symbolism add another layer, touching on themes associated with the Da Vinci Code – hidden knowledge, control, and unseen systems at work.

What elevates Déjà Vu beyond a single reading is how it reveals itself over time. Under standard lighting, the work appears complete. Under black light, concealed elements emerge, introducing a secondary visual layer that alters how the piece is experienced.

Concept & References:

  • Digital glitches and fragmented perception inspired by The Matrix
  • Classical art references reworked through a contemporary lens
  • Themes of control, hidden systems and coded information
  • The tension between familiarity and uncertainty

The artwork is presented in a bespoke three-layer ‘glitch’ frame, designed specifically for this piece. The layered construction adds depth and a sense of movement, reinforcing the idea of disruption and reconstruction rather than acting as a passive surround. The finish is exceptionally high, giving the work strong physical presence and impact in person.

Hidden Features:

  • UV-reactive elements revealed under black light
  • Concealed secondary imagery
  • A layered viewing experience that rewards closer inspection

While rooted in pop-culture reference, Déjà Vu sits comfortably beyond it - appealing to collectors, design-led interiors and commercial spaces seeking work with narrative depth and visual impact.

Materials: Acrylic paint with UV-reactive paint for hidden artwork
Size: Artwork 150 cm × 100 cm
Frame: Presented in a float frame and encased within a custom outer frame, designed to give the illusion of movement and elements sliding into place.
