SMOKING FACES (Original)

Smoking Faces is an extraordinary large-scale original by British string artist Ben Koracevic, transforming two simple materials - needle pins and string - into an intricately constructed figurative artwork.

Built from approximately 71,000 individually positioned needle pins and 2,000 metres of string, the work took around 700 hours to complete. What appears from a distance as a highly detailed image reveals, on closer inspection, an extraordinary network of intersecting lines, each contributing to the depth, tone and definition of the finished piece.

Koracevic’s process begins by mapping and scaling the composition onto the wooden surface before positioning thousands of pins to establish its structure. String is then worked progressively between those points, with overlapping layers functioning much like traditional pencil shading - greater concentrations of string creating darker areas, contrast and dimensionality. It is an exacting process in which mathematics, spatial awareness and instinctive mark-making come together.

The sheer scale and density of Smoking Faces make the physical process inseparable from the finished artwork. Viewed from across a room, the composition resolves as an image. Move closer and that image begins to fragment into thousands of individual connections - revealing the remarkable amount of time, patience and precision behind it.
