OTTERS PLAYING UNDERWATER: LIFE SIZE (Limited Edition of 12)

A life-size underwater grouping of a mother otter with playful cubs. Mackie has long been fascinated by otters and their intelligence and social behaviour. For the supporting structure he was inspired by an ancient tree root found washed ashore beside a Scottish loch.

As the original was too small, he made a larger sculpted version in clay, using heat on its wet surface to achieve an eroded, time-worn texture before bronze casting. The composition brings together the liveliness of the animals and the sculptural character of submerged timber.

Dimensions: 208 H × 103 L × 50 W cm (height unmounted)
