Hamish Mackie
Bronze Wildlife Sculpture | Power & Movement | Nature Brought to Life
Hamish Mackie is one of Britain's leading contemporary wildlife sculptors, known for his extraordinary ability to capture the movement, character and spirit of animals in bronze. Raised on a farm in Cornwall, his connection with the natural world began early and has shaped a career spanning three decades. From the explosive energy of a galloping horse to the quiet alertness of a hare, his sculptures bring wildlife to life with remarkable authenticity, expressive detail and an unmistakable sense of freedom.
Largely self-taught as a sculptor, Hamish's approach is rooted in first-hand observation. His travels have taken him from the African wilderness to Antarctica, India and Australia, studying animals in their natural habitats and developing an instinctive understanding of their anatomy and behaviour. Working from his Oxfordshire studio, he models primarily in clay and plasticine, combining anatomical accuracy with bold, spontaneous marks that remain visible through the traditional lost-wax bronze casting process. The result is sculpture that feels wonderfully alive, capturing not simply how an animal looks, but how it moves, behaves and exists in the wild.
Among his most significant achievements is the monumental Goodman's Fields Horses installation in the City of London. Commissioned by Berkeley Group, the six larger-than-life bronze horses galloping through the public piazza have become a London landmark, earning the prestigious Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture and Fountains in 2016. His work has also been exhibited at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Blenheim Palace and internationally, with sculptures held in public and private collections around the world.
Hamish continues to attract important commissions, including a striking peacock for Arbuthnot Latham and a series of bespoke lion and lioness sculptural tables for British fragrance house Penhaligon's. The latter followed a research visit to Tanzania in 2025, bringing together his passion for wildlife with exceptional craftsmanship and contemporary design. His latest works continue to explore the beauty and individuality of animals, from British hares, otters and Highland cattle to the commanding presence of African wildlife.
What makes Hamish's work so compelling is the life within it. There is strength without stiffness, movement without exaggeration and an honesty that comes from truly understanding his subjects. Each sculpture carries the energy of a moment witnessed in nature, transformed through skill, patience and instinct into something enduring. It is this rare ability to capture not just the form, but the very spirit of an animal, that makes his work so memorable.
