CUBA (One-Off)

My oil painting “Cuba” was created with the aim to capture the enduring spirit of the Cuban revolution, focusing on the legendary figures of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro as well as its inspirational people. I want the artwork to portray the unwavering resolve and revolutionary fervour of the people of Cuba, symbolising a nation fuelled by resilience and love for justice.

Despite relentless sanctions and international hardships, the Cuban people have selflessly sent Doctors all over the world, most notably during the early stages of the covid crisis when they sent Doctors to the eye of the storm in Italy. They have also sent armies to fight against suppression and racism such as The Angolan war where the Cuban army defeated the then apartheid state of South Africa. The people of Cuba have stood resiliently in the face of adversity.

The phrase “Patria o Muerte, Venceremos” which means “Homeland or death, we will win” was a famous slogan of the Cuban revolution and it reminds us of the unmistakable resolve of the people of Cuba. The painting celebrates Cuba’s extraordinary history of courage, compassion and defiance, echoing the resilient heartbeat of a nation that refuses to be silenced by sanctions or oppression.

This painting is part of my “Old Stories” series and so I have created the work to appear as an old book cover, a first edition book cover, telling us a true and inspiring story.
