Ascent by Nicola Beattie – a tall, monolithic oak sculpture standing on a solid square oak base. Hand-carved from rich golden-brown oak with deep, textured chisel marks, the piece features a vertical architectural slot running through its length, stepped recesses at the top, and small inset hollows. The surface reveals warm amber and honey tones with darker grain lines, natural knots, and splits in the base, evoking the weathered strength of ancient standing stones and castle remnants.

ASCENT (One-Off)

A commanding work from Nicola Beattie’s Monolith series, this sculpture draws directly from the fortified landscape of Pembrokeshire - its castles, ruins, and time-worn architecture embedded into the form. Tall and grounded, the piece echoes the physical presence of stone towers and defensive walls shaped by centuries of conflict and endurance.

At its core is a carved stairway, rising steadily through the body of the sculpture towards a narrow opening at the top. This ascent from darkness into light becomes a quiet metaphor for hope – a long, upward journey through struggle, turmoil, and uncertainty towards refuge and clarity. The steps are deliberate and uncompromising, reinforcing the sense of perseverance required to reach the summit.

Texture plays a central role. The lower section is aggressively worked, evoking battle, erosion, and the weight of history. As the form rises, the surface gradually softens and lightens, mirroring the emotional shift from conflict towards calm and resolution.

Carved in Welsh oak, the sculpture carries both physical and symbolic weight - rooted in place, memory, and resilience. Ascent stands as a contemplative monument to endurance, offering a moment of stillness at the end of a hard-won climb.
