SENTINEL (One-Off)

This sculpture forms part of Nicola Beattie’s Sentinel series - tall, slender forms conceived as guardians, standing quietly watchful. The surface is worked with a pitted texture and darkened markings that suggest age, weathering, and the slow passage of time, as if the figure has been standing in place for generations.

Architectural references run throughout the piece. A lancet window and two small circular openings at the top echo features found in historic castle structures, with the paired apertures reading subtly as eyes - alert, observant, and unmoving. These details reinforce the sense of vigilance and protection embedded in the form.

The sculpture curves gently backwards, lending it a subtle figurative quality and a sense of poised balance. Finished with oil and wax, the surface is smooth to the touch, inviting closer engagement while retaining its quiet authority. Solid, restrained, and contemplative, the piece embodies endurance and guardianship through form rather than narrative.
