PTARMIGAN - LAGOPUS MUTUS (Limited Edition of 15)

A finely observed bronze study of the rock Ptarmigan captured standing proudly atop a frost-shattered outcrop - alert, composed and perfectly adapted to its high-mountain realm. Nick Bibby emphasises the bird’s clean lines and gentle curves, sculpting the sleek posture and calm confidence that define this elegant member of the grouse family.

Known for its remarkable seasonal transformation, the ptarmigan turns pure white in winter to blend seamlessly with snow and ice. Its connection to the Arctic and subarctic landscapes inspired Nick to sculpt this piece following his life-size Gyrfalcon, another predator of the same rugged environment. Together, they reflect the beauty and resilience of the species that inhabit those remote, frozen territories.

The original sculpture was modelled in wax-based clay and cast in bronze using the lost-wax process, ensuring every feather and contour is translated with precision and clarity.

A serene, sculptural tribute to one of the high mountains’ most iconic birds.
