DANCING CRANES (Limited Edition of 7)

Dancing Cranes is a monumental bronze sculpture by Simon Gudgeon, inspired by the crane - often referred to as the ‘bird of happiness’ - and the elegant form of the Strelitzia, or crane flower. The sculpture captures a sense of grace, harmony and upward movement, with the sweeping organic forms creating a powerful yet refined sculptural presence.

Cranes have appeared in art, mythology and symbolism for thousands of years. In the Egyptian Museum in Cairo there is a limestone relief depicting cranes dating back to 2660–2590 BC, while throughout ancient Greece the birds appeared on vases, bowls and within mythology alongside Apollo, Hermes and Eros. Cranes were also associated with Hephaestus, the god of sculptors.

In Chinese culture the crane has long symbolised happiness, longevity and liberation from earthly constraints. Taoism refers to the ‘immortal crane’, while Buddhism regards the crane as a godly bird existing between the present and the hereafter, giving it strong associations with immortality and spiritual connection. Across China, Japan and Korea, cranes continue to represent peace, unity and enduring happiness.

The rich bronze patina enhances the flowing surfaces and elegant contours of the sculpture, allowing changing light and shadow to reveal new details throughout the day. Designed for landscaped gardens, estates and architectural environments, Dancing Cranes combines symbolism, movement and scale within a striking contemporary form.
