PILERI (One-Off)

This is the first of a series of sculptures entitled ‘Pileri’.  This Pileri series consists of columnar forms inspired by pillars, castle turrets and towers, which I have made to appear weathered through markings etched into the surfaces and edges.  As in many of my pieces, there are architectural features.  

This sculpture has darkened archways on either side, bigger on one side than the other, which represent dark safe places to escape into.  I think of these as havens or hiding places to escape the tumult of war and trauma.  

The surface of this sculpture is noticeably textured and charred/blackened to describe age and natural erosion, and the pale markings where I have scraped off the prominent parts of the black texture are reminiscent of lime salts on the walls, often seen cascading down ruins here in Pembrokeshire.
