SOLITUDE (One-Off)
I worked on this sculpture Solitude at the same time as Pileri, although this one was completed afterwards. Solitude has a fainter texture than Pileri as I have worked into the surface with burrs rather than chisels; a softer finish than I usually make, with more of a contrast to the bog oak base.
I chose this base as, nearing the end of making this sculpture, I was reminded more and more of a lighthouse. The raw texture of the bog oak helps to give the idea of separation and solitude, much as a lighthouse on a rock. Unreachable and isolated from the outside world.
I think of a peaceful haven inside the arches in this series - somewhere to escape to in times of war and from the troubled external world. The textured exteriors of the pillars illustrate the turbulence of struggle and war, whereas the pillar forms are calm and peaceful. I often char the interiors of the archways to a soft velvety blackness to emphasise the notion of disappearing into a safe refuge out of sight and sound.
