ELECTRIC BLUE HARE (Limited Edition x 9)

Background: Running Garden Hare 

This bronze wildlife sculpture of a running hare sculpture came to me, after I did a couple of smaller sculptures.  I did not want it to be realistic, but more conceptual.  The fact that I used scrim and plaster to build the sculpture really helped.   I could not get too embroiled in detail!

Hares are very discreet wildlife animals.  They are hardly seen by the human eye, but it’s a magical sight when they are spotted, albeit for a second. They run fast, especially evading predators and are known to run at speeds of about 45 miles per hour.  This makes them the fastest wild mammal in the UK.  What is more, they can speed up and slow down at break-neck speeds, enabling them to change direction incredibly quickly.

The Sculpture

So I wanted to show a hare changing direction, fast, with a twist in the body.  I  also made it absolutely vast in order to create a statement piece for the garden. The ears are exaggerated and so are the long legs and big paws. The movement in the body is accentuated by the way in which I have layered the scrim and plaster on the metal framework to create strong gestural strokes in the piece.  The body has a huge twist in it, as the hare turns a corner.

I then had the garden sculpture cast, but the transportation to the foundry was a challenge.  I moved it in a horse box and various limbs of the hare sculpture crumbled under the pressure.  But all was repaired at the foundry!  Whilst I have had the hare sculpture cast with an electric blue patination, you are able to have something more traditional such as foundry bronze. Or you may prefer a colour of your choice !  It can be cast in bronze as a limited edition of 9, or bronze resin or iron (rust).

This wildlife sculpture of a larger than life hare looks amazing at the end of a long vista or on top of a slight hill or in the middle of a park, as it can hold its own space.  The hare is also a very welcoming sight at the beginning of a drive way – which is one of the places he is now in the heart of Devon!

It’s not easy to miss, so watch out as there are only a few of them around!  It can be cast in bronze as a limited edition of 9 or in bronze resin as a limited edition of 25
