the collectionEver since I was a young child playing with my grandfather's First and Second World War medals, I have thought the ribbons are amongst the most stunning combinations of colours and minimal forms. I am unsure if it is the iconography of the medals, their history, or the sacrifices that these little pirces of silk represent that bestows their intrinsic value.
It could be a reflection of the personal tragedies that winning them may have involved, which imbues them with with a timeless quality that reminds us of millions of lives lived and lost. 2016 being the hundred year annivisersary of the battle of the Somme, which was one of the cruelist battles of the 1914 to 1918 conflict, adds poiniancy to the human cost of each ribbon.
This print is a celebration of these ironically light and colourfully juxtaposed ribbons, combined with a spiral alphabet comprising the ranks of men and women who through-out history have fought to earn them and a contra spiral, of a Z to A of literary or fictional military characters.
'Pretty Ribbons' is a signed limited edition comprising 5 original digital prints on stretched canvasses, each one painted with an acrylic protection varnish and finished with a high gloss glaze on the silk squares
