Cube explores balance and the quiet tension created when a familiar geometric form is placed in an unfamiliar position. Balanced precisely on one corner, the cube shifts from something static into something subtly dynamic.
The work began as a stacked slate original, with individual pieces shaped and layered by hand to construct the cube in stone. This allowed subtle irregularities to remain within an otherwise precise geometry. The original was then translated into bronze using the lost-wax process, capturing the texture and layered character of the slate surface in a permanent material.
The idea was inspired by slate from the western islands of Scotland, where iron pyrite can appear as naturally occurring cubic crystals within the stone. Often known as “fool’s gold,” pyrite catches the light with flashes of brilliance inside a darker, more restrained material. Cube pays quiet homage to these hidden geometries, reconstructing in sculptural form the very shape found within the stone itself.
Fixed to a circular bronze mounting plate, Cube has a light visual footprint while remaining stable. It can be placed indoors or outdoors, from garden plinths to interior tables and architectural settings.
Each bronze Cube is signed, dated, individually numbered and supplied with a certificate of authenticity. The form can also be developed at larger scale in bronze, slate or stainless steel.
