Description
This painting was created for the Lohengrin exhibition at the MEAM · European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, in collaboration with The Wagner Club and Katharina Wagner, great-granddaughter of the composer. It portrays Ortrud, a central character from Wagner’s opera Lohengrin, with the title drawn from her own words in Act II: “Not for nothing am I versed in the most secret magic arts.”

Having studied classical music and trained as a chorus conductor, opera has always been a deep passion alongside painting. Wagner’s Lohengrin is among my favourites, and Ortrud has long fascinated me. Though cast as the antagonist, her fierce determination, intelligence, and magnetic presence give her a dark, compelling charm. In this portrait, I sought to capture both her ruthless strength and her enigmatic, almost mystical side - a woman who chose to embrace the “secret magic arts” and whose hidden power continues to intrigue.
