LEOPARD CLIMBING DOWN A TREE (Limited Edition of 12)

Part of Mackie’s 2025 Leopard Series, this sculpture was inspired by a female leopard he observed in the Serengeti descending from a sycamore fig tree. He and his guide waited near the Mara River as the cat, which had been resting beside a kill, began its remarkably controlled descent at dusk.

Mackie drew on that encounter and other observations of the animal’s precise movement and balance, combining them with the form of a weathered branch found closer to home. The sculpture focuses on the tension between strength and agility and was informed by his wildlife study in Namibia and Tanzania.
