PINE CONE - 130cm (Bronze Limited Edition)

Pine Cone is rooted in both nature and memory. Growing up on the west coast of Scotland, James Parker was surrounded by Scots pines, gathering fallen cones from the woodland floor without yet knowing that these familiar objects held one of nature’s most refined structural systems.

The work reflects Parker’s fascination with natural geometry and the repeated appearance of Fibonacci sequences across the natural world. In pine cones, these patterns appear as interlocking spirals running in clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, allowing the form to grow with extraordinary efficiency and balance.

For Parker, abstraction is a process of subtraction - removing the unnecessary to reveal the essence of the form. In Pine Cone, the sculpture resolves as eight spirals in one direction, thirteen in the other, with twenty-one scales just off the vertical. These relationships define the rhythm and structure of the piece.

The original sculpture was modelled by hand, then moulded and cast using the lost-wax process. Larger versions are produced using sand casting techniques, allowing the precision of the form to be retained at scale.

Available from intimate editions to monumental outdoor works, Pine Cone celebrates nature’s quiet intelligence - a sculptural form shaped by memory, mathematics and time.
