SHELL - 122cm (Bronze Limited Edition)
Shell is rooted in James Parker’s lifelong fascination with the natural world and the shoreline landscapes of southwest Scotland. Growing up in Galloway, Parker spent hours exploring caves and rock pools at St Medan, gathering whelk shells from the sand and shoreline.
The sculpture is based on the whelk shell, a natural form shaped by time, survival and evolution. Its spiral can be described through mathematical relationships, yet it remains entirely organic in character. In translating this form into bronze, Parker uses the shell as a starting point, subtly refining its proportions so the work resolves as sculpture rather than literal representation.
The challenge lies in maintaining continuity through the curve while keeping the surface calm, measured and uninterrupted. The result is a contemporary bronze sculpture that balances organic movement with sculptural restraint.
Shell is available across a wide range of scales, from small hand-held works to larger garden and monumental pieces. Smaller editions are produced using the lost-wax process, while larger works are sand cast in bronze. Traditional brown patination is the most common finish, with alternative patinas available to suit interior, architectural or landscape settings.
The work has been shown in gallery settings, garden landscapes and at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including a four-foot example presented on Parker’s Main Avenue trade stand. Whether placed indoors, outdoors or within sight of the sea, Shell carries a quiet connection to coastline, memory and natural form.
Each sculpture is signed, dated, individually numbered and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
