Deborah Harrison sculpture Slave Song, a one-off hand-carved black soapstone figure showing a bound male form with shackled wrist and heavy chain links, emerging from raw stone. The polished dark surface contrasts against the rough, natural texture, creating a powerful narrative of struggle, endurance, and the human spirit.

SLAVE SONG (One-Off)

SLAVE SONG (One-Off)

“In the soapstone I saw pain and movement.”

This piece was inspired by the oldest known annotated slave song, recorded over 200 years ago by abolitionist Granville Sharpe and preserved in the Gloucestershire Archives. Interpreted musically by Roger Gibbs, the song became the spark for this sculpture.

While rooted in history, the work also speaks to the present. Modern slavery remains a global issue, with thousands of cases reported in the UK alone each year. This sculpture stands as both remembrance and warning - a reminder of the suffering endured, and of the continuing fight for freedom and human dignity.
