SOLITUDE (One-Off)

Carved from charred sycamore and set on a contrasting bog oak base, this sculpture was developed alongside Pileri, though completed later. The surface is worked more softly than many of Nicola Beattie’s earlier pieces, shaped with burrs rather than chisels to create a gentler, more subdued texture. This quieter finish heightens the contrast with the raw, heavily textured base below.

As the form evolved, the sculpture began to suggest the presence of a lighthouse - tall, solitary, and anchored to an unforgiving landscape. The bog oak base reinforces this sense of isolation, its rough, eroded surface evoking rock, distance, and separation from the surrounding world.

Throughout this body of work, Nicola explores the idea of inner refuge. The pillar form remains calm and composed, while its exterior textures speak of turbulence and conflict. Within the central recess, the interior is charred to a soft, velvety black - a deliberate act that suggests withdrawal, concealment, and safety. It is imagined as a place to retreat from noise, struggle, and unrest - a quiet, protected space held within a resilient outer shell.

Measured and contemplative, the sculpture invites stillness, offering a moment of pause and introspection amid the suggestion of solitude and endurance.
