Alison Holt
Textile Art | Light, Line & Layer | Stitched Presence
Alison Holt is a British textile artist whose work sits at the meeting point of drawing, painting and stitch. Using freehand machine embroidery over painted silk, she creates quietly powerful compositions that capture fleeting light, seasonal change and the subtle atmosphere of the natural world.
Her process is slow and deliberate. Each piece begins with painted silk, establishing tone and movement, before layers of thread are stitched freely by hand-guided machine. Line builds over colour, texture builds over light, and scenes gradually emerge through hundreds of individual decisions. The result is work that feels both delicate and deeply considered - images that hold stillness, depth and memory.
With more than four decades of practice, Alison has developed a mastery of her medium that allows thread to behave like pencil, wash and shadow all at once. Her landscapes and studies are not literal records of place, but emotional responses to it - moments observed, remembered and distilled through mark and stitch.
Alison’s work has been exhibited widely across the UK, Europe and Australasia and is held in private collections internationally. While rooted in textile tradition, her practice resists categorisation. These are not decorative works - they are immersive, contemplative pieces that reward close attention and time.
Each Alison Holt artwork invites the viewer to slow down and look again. Thread becomes light. Silk becomes surface. And through patience and precision, quiet moments are given lasting presence.
